Ill Brother Gordon Burns Smith, 33° IGH


ILLUSTRIUS GORDON BURNS SMITH, 33° IGH BIO 


Brother Smith was born June 11, 1944 in Lamar County Texas. He attended High School in Tifton, GA and College at the University of Georgia and then Law School at Cumberland Law School in Birmingham, AL.  He was married to Anna Habersham Wright Smith. Brother Smith was a graduate of the U.S. Army Airborne and Ranger School in Fort Benning, GA. He served as Captain of the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam as well as many other stations. He served as acting chief of administrative law United nations Command/US Forces-Korea/Eighth US Army Republic of Korea in 1990 and as a brigade staff judge advocate. He also served in Operation Desert Storm and Retired as a Lieutenant Colonel United States Army and Colonel Georgia Army National Guard in 1994. He was licensed to practice law in Georgia and Alabama, as well as admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court amongst many other courts. In private practice in Savannah, GA he also was the Chairman of the Chatham County Board of Elections, former assistant to the Chatham County Attorney, former Chief of Felony Prosecution Team as Assistant Chatham County District Attorney and Chairman of the Savannah-Chatham County Historical Site and Monuments Commissions.  He attended St. John’s Episcopal Church and participated as a Sunday School Teacher. He was Past Master of Landrum Lodge No. 48, member of Magnolia Lodge No. 53 (District of Columbia), and honorary member of Richard T. Turner Lodge No. 116.  He was a Past Chairman of the Valley of Savannah Scottish Rite Executive Committee, raised to a 33° Inspector General Honorary in November 1995, and a Life Member of the Scottish Rite Research Society. Ill. Gordon Burns Smith, 33° IGH was also a member of Georgia Priory No. 39, Knights of the York Cross of Honor, Oglethorpe Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine, Appeals and Grievances Committee, Jurisprudence and General Welfare Committee, Parliamentarian for the Grand Lodge of Georgia, Past Master Savannah Lodge of Research, Past High Priest Royal Arch Masons, Order of the High Priesthood Grand Chapter of Georgia R.A.M., Past Illustrious Master Georgia Council No. 2 Royal and Select Masters, member of the Order of the Silver Trowel, Past Eminent Commander Palestine Commandry, Life Member of the Royal Order of Scotland, Perpetual Member of both the DaNang Chapter, Hunter Chapter, and Saigon Chapter of National Sojourners. Charter and Life Member of the George Washington Chapter, Order of the Demolay. Member of Alee Temple as well as the Knights of Mecca.  Brother Gordon Smith, 33° came from a Masonic lineage. His maternal Great Uncle was Past Grand Master John Livingston Travis who prior to stepping down as Grand Master delivered to the Grand Lodge the lease and quitclaim deed for the 30 acres of land at Shellman Bluff to be used as a camp for the children at the Masonic Home.  Smith’s maternal Grandfather Maj. Gen. Robert Jesse Travis was a Past Master of Landrum Lodge No. 48, 33° IGH Valley of Savannah, Past Grand Master of Grand Lodge of Georgia and Past Potentate of the Alee Temple.
